DI's concept of "Forest Resource Ecosystem"
As described in a Nikkei article published on 24 September 2021 by Kazuaki Fuji, the “Forest Resource Ecosystem” is a concept Dream Incubator Inc. has created after several talks with Japan’s ministries and agencies including the Ministry of the Environment, the Forestry Agency, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry with the aim of breaking the “unprofitable to harvest” and “left unharvested, so abandoned” cycle in Japan’s forestry sector. The idea behind the model is to facilitate aggregation and consolidation of forests to achieve higher profitability, productivity for forest owners and forest contractors as well as to provide a more stable supply of forest products and greater added values to stakeholders throughout the forestry value chain, including wood producers, house manufacturers, construction companies, to name a few. As a result, the rising demand from end users will then help promote sustainable forest management.
Currently in Japan, the Draft Climate Action Plan which was announced earlier this September signals a decline in forest sinks: down more than 10% from 42.9 MtCO2e in FY2019 to the FY2030 target of 38 MtCO2e. While forests cover about 70% of Japan’s land, many of these are deteriorating, let alone being fully utilized.
Meanwhile, the world’s afforestation is like a marathon. For example, Reuters reported in August that China started to gear up for their "Green Great Wall” project to combat desertification with a plan of planting 36,000 square kilometers (3.6 million hectares, more than the total area of Belgium) of new forests annually from 2021 to 2025. Planting trees has been touted as President Xi Jinping’s flagship initiative on their race to net-zero by 2060.
