Vietnam-Japan Hydrogen Seminar 2024
The Vietnam-Japan Hydrogen Seminar 2024, organized by the Vietnam Association for Hydrogen Conversion (VAHC) in collaboration with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), was held on September 17, 2024, at the Nikko Saigon Hotel. This seminar brought together key stakeholders from both countries to discuss opportunities and challenges in developing a hydrogen economy in Vietnam. Dream Incubator SEA (DI SEA), a sponsor of the event, played an active role by sharing expertise in hydrogen strategy and fostering collaborations that aim to accelerate Vietnam’s transition to clean energy.
The primary goal of the seminar was to explore the potential for Vietnam to develop a hydrogen economy by leveraging collaborations with Japan, a global leader in hydrogen technology. With the country committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the Vietnamese government has launched National Hydrogen Development Strategy, aiming to produce 100,000 to 500,000 tons of hydrogen annually by 2030, and scaling up to 10-20 million tons by 2050.
During the seminar, Ms. Yamaguchi Yuriko, Senior Manager of Green Energy and PPP Infrastructure at DI SEA, shared the company’s extensive experience in consulting Indonesia on building hydrogen strategy and how these insights could be tailored for Vietnam. DI aims to help governments and businesses navigate the complexities of hydrogen development, including policy formulation, infrastructure creation, and fostering public-private partnerships.
Talking at the event, experts from both the public and private sectors highlighted several challenges, including the lack of comprehensive infrastructure, high initial investment costs, and regulatory uncertainties. While the government is eager to promote clean energy, the legal frameworks necessary to support hydrogen development remain underdeveloped. Additionally, the high cost of technology acquisition and implementation further impedes progress. In contrast, Japan has already established a comprehensive legal framework for hydrogen projects, advanced expertise, and financial capacity. With Japan’s extensive experience in green energy and strong bilateral ties with Vietnam, the country stands as an ideal partner in accelerating Vietnam’s hydrogen journey.
Additionally, Mr. Nguyen Doan Duc Tuan Anh, DI SEA’s General Director, moderated the discussion panel which explored the critical intersections of policy, finance, and supply chains to foster the Vietnamese hydrogen market. DI’s deep knowledge of renewable energy and collaboration with Japanese stakeholders makes the company a vital partner for Vietnam’s hydrogen transformation.
